Find out How Coaching made its Inroad into Corporate WorldThe moment
you hear the word coach, you will immediately visualize a
person in a foot ball field with his highest sound pitch shouting or spurting
out his instructions to the players. You may also recollect the basketball
match you saw last week wherein the coach would have vehemently corrected
his/her team members playing styles. Coaching is a wonderful tool that makes the present playing field level for all the players in any corporate world so as to make each and every individual have equal chances. According to Daniel Goleman, coaching is used in a context where all the committed and motivated individuals are ready to perform the allotted role but do not know as how to proceed or do not know the long term goals of the organization they work for. Normally coaching is carried out in two levels, namely individual level and team level. As the name goes, in any team coaching all the members work together and it is possible that the members may have a varied level of competence and commitment. Hence, due to this different competence levels there may be conflicts within the group and the coaching can ameliorate such differences and make the team work together in tandem to reach the set goal amicably. Further, the coaching leader may be able to handle the situation in such a manner that all the team members are made to respect the common goal leaving aside the personal differences and work together to achieve the long term goals. Coaching Boosts the Morale of the Work Force By way of coaching the morale of the individuals could be boosted and the persons can be trained to take up leadership roles voluntarily. Coaching can serve as a tool to affirm the work force the companies genuine interests on the welfare of its staff and once any individual undergoes some type of coaching, he/she will be able to identify his/her weaknesses and strengths. Once the staff are made to know their strengths and weakness, they can be further trained to boost their productivity and help them to plan their career and come up in the rank ladder. When it comes to the level of coaching, the same may differ and the leader can assess the individuals requirement based on the competence and knowledge level of a person. For instance, a less experienced person or a new staff may need an intensive coaching and where as any of the experienced staff may need only a follow-up training to enhance abilities. In any coaching, the feedback and suggestions received are made use for further mending the coaching schedules and hence the coaching is a dynamic process in any organization. Coaching Helps Individuals to Excel It is true that habitual good practice will certainly result in excellence and it is important to conduct regular meetings and seek constructive feedback for further improving the coaching. In many organizations, self-appraisal is in place today and based on the self-appraisals made by the individual, they are trained or coached so as to fulfil their needs. In such processes, each and every individual gets their due share of recognition and training needs met and the same can in turn get reflected in the growth of the organization positively. To understand this concept better we will take the case of an orchestra. In any orchestra there will be members who play different instruments and their training or practice need may also differ based on their expertise. And once the coaching needs are met individually, they collectively perform better and bring accolades to one and all. Coaching Instills a High Level of Commitment A coaching leader is an important person and it is the same person who is instrumental in playing a balancing act between immediate target achievement and the organizations long term goal. Normally coaching makes the work force to understand and committed to their individual target in relation to their organizations overall target and by constant follow-up, the individuals target is seamlessly merged to achieve the total organizations target. Through coaching, it is also possible to get the staff highly motivated and set short-term team goals in relation to the organizations long term goal for achievement. Coaching brings Like Minded Leaders together Leaders live their life by setting an example and such leaders play a good role in coaching too. An effective leader who does what he preaches will definitely be able to get his ideas driven home in any group. A leader who is well organized, credible and competent is his/her field, will communicate openly and encouragingly and all his/her clear ideas will certainly be well received by the members of the group. The members also try to emulate their leaders attitudes and good practices and by this way the organization also stands to get a committed work force. Further, these members who have been positively charged out of the coaching will further dispense their abilities to their fellow colleagues and the rippling effect will soon pervade the entire organization for good. Of course,
there are some darker sides of coaching too exist and they are to be borne
in mind for better results. As said earlier, the coaching, be it team
level or individual level, needs leaders who are physically, emotionally,
and mentally fit so as to drive home the desired information and skills,
lest the result will be opposite and disastrous. |
